Your liver makes this form from the vitamin D you take in, and your kidneys later convert a small amount of it into 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the active hormone.[2] Labs measure the 25-OH form instead of the active form because it sticks around. 25(OH)D has a half-life of about two weeks in blood, while the active form clears in under four hours.[1] That long half-life makes 25(OH)D a steady read on the vitamin D your body has accumulated over recent weeks, not a snapshot of one hormonal moment.
How It's Measured

Seasonality is real and large-scale. Across nearly 3.5 million US samples, 25(OH)D followed a lagged seasonal wave, peaking in late summer and troughing in late winter.[5]
What counts as a "sufficient" level is genuinely unsettled.
