Time in Daylight is the cumulative time each day that an Apple Watch's ambient light sensor detects light bright enough to count as daylight, as distinct from indoor lighting. Apple built the feature primarily around outdoor-time research in children's eye health, though the underlying light exposure is also relevant to circadian rhythm research.[4]

What Time in Daylight Measures

The metric is a duration, minutes spent under daylight-level brightness, not a light intensity reading in lux and not a measure of UV exposure or sun damage. The distinguishing feature is the light level itself: outdoor daylight, even on an overcast day, is typically many times brighter than a well-lit room, and Apple's sensor is built to tell the two apart rather than just log time spent outside via location.

How It's Measured

An Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later uses its built-in ambient light sensor to sample brightness throughout the day and totals the minutes that cross the daylight threshold, without any manual logging.[4] Because it depends on the Watch's own sensor, it's specific to that device. An iPhone carried in a pocket or bag isn't positioned to read ambient light the same way, so this metric doesn't get generated from phone data alone. Apple has also enabled Family Setup and Health Sharing for this metric specifically, so a parent can see a child's Watch-recorded daylight time.[4]

Why People Track Time in Daylight

Light is the primary cue the body's internal circadian clock uses to synchronize with the 24-hour day, so daylight exposure sits upstream of a lot of sleep-timing research, including topics covered in our sleep latency and sleep stages entries. Apple's own stated rationale for the feature, though, centers on a different body of research: outdoor light exposure and myopia (nearsightedness) risk in children, covered below.

What the Research Shows

On circadian timing, a 2013 study sent a group of adults camping for a week with no artificial light or screens and compared their circadian rhythm before and after. The researchers found that after the week of natural light exposure, participants' melatonin release began about two hours earlier and lined up closely with sunset, compared to when the same participants were measured living under their normal routine of indoor and electric lighting.[1] That's a direct demonstration that the timing of light exposure, not just how much sleep someone gets, moves the body's internal clock.

On myopia, a randomized clinical trial in Guangzhou, China assigned some primary schools to add roughly 40 extra minutes of outdoor time to the school day and compared new myopia cases over three years against schools that didn't change their schedule. The intervention schools saw a lower cumulative rate of new myopia cases than the control schools over the study period.[2] A separate systematic review and meta-analysis pooling multiple studies of outdoor light exposure and myopia in children described the relationship as dose-dependent, with more weekly outdoor exposure associated with a lower rate of new myopia cases, less myopic shift in a common refraction measurement, and slower elongation of the eye, the physical change linked to nearsightedness.[3]

Does Time in Daylight only work with an Apple Watch?

Yes. It relies on the ambient light sensor built into the Apple Watch, introduced with watchOS 10, so it needs a compatible Watch to be worn outdoors to record. An iPhone alone doesn't generate this specific metric.

Why does daylight exposure matter for sleep timing?
