What Vitamin A Measures

A vitamin A blood test measures retinol, the form of the vitamin that circulates in blood.[1] Retinol is the parent compound of a small family of molecules the body builds from it. The best known is retinal, the light-sensing piece of the visual cycle. Retinal sits inside the pigment rhodopsin in the retina's rod cells, and when light hits it, it changes shape and starts the signal your brain reads as sight.[2] The names aren't a coincidence. Retinol and retinal are both named after the retina, where the vitamin's role was first worked out.

Vision is the famous job, but not the only one. Vitamin A also supports immune function and directs how cells grow and specialize, which is why it matters for skin and the linings of the gut and airways.[1]

It reaches the body in two forms. Preformed vitamin A, meaning retinol and retinyl esters, comes from animal foods like dairy, fish, and liver. Provitamin A carotenoids like beta-carotene come from colorful plants, and the body converts them to retinol.[1]

Serum retinol comes from a standard venous blood draw, usually ordered as part of a nutritional or micronutrient panel rather than a routine screen. Labs report their own reference interval with each result, and that interval varies by lab and testing method.

What the Research Shows

The liver is the body's main vitamin A depot, and research is still mapping how the vitamin moves between the liver cells that take it up and the cells that store it.[4]

A 2016 review of vitamin A biomarkers concluded that serum retinol is under homeostatic control, partly because the vitamin is toxic at high concentrations, which limits how well the blood level reflects status outside the extremes.[3]

High intakes of preformed vitamin A in early pregnancy were linked to birth defects in a 1995 New England Journal of Medicine study of over 22,000 pregnancies, which is why vitamin A intake during pregnancy is a topic clinicians manage.[5]
