Definition
Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from an ovarian follicle, roughly midway through the menstrual cycle.[1] The LH surge weakens the follicle wall until it ruptures and the egg escapes, and the emptied follicle then reorganizes into the corpus luteum, the temporary gland that runs the luteal phase.[2]

What Happens at Ovulation
Through the follicular phase, one dominant follicle matures in the ovary and pumps out rising estradiol, and that estradiol peak is what triggers the LH surge. The surge does the physical work of ovulation. It drives up enzymes inside the follicle that break down the follicle wall until it gives way, and the egg is pushed out of the ovary along with the cells that surround it.[1][2] Ovulation follows the start of the surge by roughly 34 to 36 hours.[2]
The released egg doesn't last long. A review of ovulation-detection methods puts its lifespan at about one to two days.[4] The follicle it left behind isn't done either. Its cells take up a yellow pigment and reorganize into the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone and runs the luteal phase until the next period.[1][2]
How It's Detected
No home method observes the egg itself. Instead, people read ovulation from the hormone shifts around it, and the signals split cleanly by timing. Signs that move before the egg releases predict ovulation: a positive ovulation test catching the LH surge, cervical mucus turning clear and stretchy, or a rise in urinary E3G.[4] Signs that move after it confirm ovulation looking backward: the basal body temperature shift and the rise in urinary PdG, both driven by progesterone from the new corpus luteum. Why People Track Ovulation
Ovulation is the hinge of the cycle. It splits the follicular phase from the luteal phase, it anchors the fertile window, and it's the event that makes a cycle ovulatory in the first place. It's also hard to pin to a calendar. In a study of 612,613 ovulatory cycles, the follicular phase averaged 16.9 days with a 95% range of 10 to 30 days, so ovulation day moves widely between people and between cycles.[5]

What the Research Shows
Ovulation timing sets the limits of conception. In a prospective study of 221 women across 625 cycles, conception occurred only when intercourse fell in a six-day window ending on the estimated day of ovulation.[3]
An LH surge doesn't guarantee the egg actually released. In one ovulation-detection review, 4.3% of the healthy women studied showed an LH surge without ovulation, and some follicles luteinize without ever rupturing.[4] That gap between the signal and the event is why retrospective markers like BBT and PdG exist.

Does ovulation always happen on day 14?
No. A study of 612,613 ovulatory cycles found the follicular phase, the stretch from period start to ovulation, averaged 16.9 days with a 95% range of 10 to 30 days.[5] Ovulation day moves around a lot between people and between cycles, so day 14 is a textbook average, not a rule.
How long does the egg live after ovulation?

Does a positive ovulation test prove ovulation happened?
No. An ovulation test detects the LH surge, which comes before the egg releases.
