Definition

Cervical mucus is a fluid secreted by glands in the cervix that changes in volume, texture, and stretchiness across the menstrual cycle as estrogen and progesterone levels shift.[1] Near ovulation it typically becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy; after ovulation it thickens again.[2]

What Cervical Mucus Measures

Cervical mucus is produced by cervical crypts, glandular structures in the cervix wall that increase their output as estrogen rises.[1] In the days before ovulation, rising estrogen makes the mucus thinner, clearer, and stretchier: the classic egg-white texture that's easier for sperm to move through. During this window it also shows a characteristic ferning pattern under a microscope.[2] After ovulation, progesterone from the corpus luteum reverses these changes, and the mucus becomes thicker, more opaque, and lower in volume.[2]

How It's Measured

Cervical mucus needs no device or lab draw. You observe it directly, typically at the vulva or vaginal opening, and describe it by sensation (dry, moist, wet, slippery) and appearance (none, sticky, creamy, watery, or egg-white). The estrogenic, egg-white-type mucus associated with peak fertility generally appears in the few days leading up to ovulation and is gone shortly after.[2]

What the Research Shows

A pooled analysis of 2,488 ovulatory cycles across three cohorts found that women averaged 6.4 days of peak, estrogenic-type mucus and 12.1 potentially fertile days per cycle. Both figures varied by age and parity: nulliparous women aged 30 and older showed less mucus production and fewer potentially fertile days than younger nulliparous women.[4]
