Definition

The fertile window is the roughly six-day stretch of the menstrual cycle when intercourse can lead to conception, ending on the day of ovulation.[1] Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for days while the egg lives about a day, so the window sits almost entirely before ovulation, not after it.[2]

What the Fertile Window Measures

The six-day figure comes from a prospective study that followed 221 women across 625 cycles while estimating ovulation from urinary hormones. Conception occurred only when intercourse took place during a six-day period ending on the estimated day of ovulation.[1] The probability of conception wasn't flat across those days either. It ran from 0.10 five days before ovulation up to 0.33 on ovulation day itself.[1]

Why It's Six Days

Two lifespans set the window's shape. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for roughly three to five days, which is what opens the window days before the egg exists.[2] The egg itself lives about one to two days after ovulation, which is what closes it.[2] Long sperm survival was the exception in practice: only 6% of the pregnancies in the timing study could be firmly attributed to sperm three or more days old.[1]

Why People Track the Fertile Window

Because its position moves. A follow-up BMJ study by the same research group found the fertile window fell entirely within days 10 to 17, the range clinical guidelines used to quote, in only about 30% of women.[3] On every day between days 6 and 21, at least 10% of women were in their fertile window.[3] The window tracks ovulation day, and ovulation day varies. A study of 612,613 ovulatory cycles found the follicular phase averaged 16.9 days with a 95% range of 10 to 30 days.[4]

What the Research Shows

The window's timing is less predictable than its length. The BMJ study concluded that the timing of the fertile window can be highly unpredictable even in women whose cycles are usually regular.[3]

Regular cycles don't pin it down because cycle-length averages hide follicular-phase variation. The 612,613-cycle study reported a mean cycle length of 29.3 days but wide spread in when ovulation fell, and its authors stress tracking physiological signs like basal body temperature rather than cycle length alone to identify the fertile period.[4]
