Definition
The luteal phase is the second half of the menstrual cycle, running from ovulation until the next period starts.[1] It begins when the ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, a temporary gland that secretes progesterone, and it ends when progesterone withdraws and menstruation begins.[1]

What Happens During the Luteal Phase
After ovulation, the follicle that released the egg doesn't just disappear. It reorganizes into the corpus luteum, a short-lived endocrine structure that takes over as the cycle's dominant hormone source.[1] The corpus luteum secretes progesterone, along with some estrogen, and progesterone thickens the uterine lining and makes it receptive in case a fertilized egg arrives.[1] If no pregnancy occurs, the corpus luteum breaks down near the end of the phase, progesterone and estrogen drop sharply, and that hormone withdrawal is what triggers the next period.[1]
How Its Length Is Tracked
The luteal phase isn't measured directly with a device. It's calculated after the fact, by counting the days between confirmed ovulation and the start of the next period. StatPearls puts the typical length at around 14 days, and a real-world study of 612,613 ovulatory cycles from more than 124,000 app users found a mean luteal length of 12.4 days, with a standard deviation of about 2.4 days.[1][5]

What the Research Shows
Cycle length varies mainly because the follicular phase varies. A study of 141 healthy women tracking over 1,000 cycles found that "the follicular phase contributes most" to overall cycle-length variability, while luteal length stayed comparatively steady for a given person cycle to cycle.[2]

In a study that tracked healthy women overnight with Oura rings across full cycles, nocturnal heart rate and body temperature were both higher during the mid- and late-luteal phases than during menses, while heart rate variability (rMSSD) was lower in those same phases.[3]

How long does the luteal phase usually last?
Research puts the average around 12 to 14 days. A real-world study of over 600,000 cycles found a mean luteal length of 12.4 days, with 95% of cycles falling between about 7 and 17 days.[1][5] For a given person, luteal length tends to stay closer to its own average from cycle to cycle than the follicular phase does.[2]
What's the difference between the luteal phase and the follicular phase?
The follicular phase runs from the first day of your period to ovulation and is driven by rising estrogen as a follicle matures. The luteal phase runs from ovulation to your next period and is driven by progesterone from the corpus luteum.[1] The follicular phase is also the more variable of the two in length.[2]
Can you get pregnant during the luteal phase?
The egg is only viable for about 24 hours after ovulation, so conception has to happen right at the start of the luteal phase or not at all that cycle. Sperm can survive for several days beforehand, which is why the fertile window extends before ovulation as well.[1]
