Definition
Water intake is the volume of fluid, from drinks and water-rich foods, that a person logs over a day. It's a dietary total rather than a lab value or a sensor reading, and the body's actual hydration status is separately regulated through thirst and the kidneys, not read directly from an intake number.[3]

What Water Intake Measures
Water intake is a running total, not a physiological reading. It adds up what you drink and, when a food log includes it, the water content of what you eat. That's a different kind of number from something like serum sodium, which reflects a moment-in-time concentration in your blood. Water intake only tells you what went in, not how your body is currently managing fluid.
The body's own regulation of that fluid runs through two connected systems: thirst, which is triggered by rising blood osmolality or falling blood volume, and the kidneys, which adjust how much water gets reabsorbed versus excreted largely through the hormone vasopressin (also called antidiuretic hormone). Together these keep total body water within a fairly narrow range regardless of exactly how much someone drinks on a given day.[3]
How It's Measured
There's no sensor for this. Water intake is logged the same way any other food or drink is, either entered manually or synced from a connected app through Apple HealthKit as a dietary water value, and totaled per day like any other tracked nutrient.
Why People Track Water Intake
The most familiar hydration rule, drink eight glasses of water a day, has a shakier research foundation than its popularity suggests. A frequently cited 2002 review in the American Journal of Physiology went looking for the science behind "8 x 8" and didn't find a supporting study. The author traced the number back to a 1945 recommendation for roughly one milliliter of water per calorie of food, a figure that already assumed most of that water would come from food itself, a detail that seems to have gotten dropped somewhere along the way. Published surveys of typical fluid intake also showed plenty of healthy people drinking well under the 8 x 8 amount without documented harm.[1]
There's also a cycle-specific angle to fluid balance. Progesterone rises through the luteal phase, and a 2006 study found progesterone directly correlated with both basal aldosterone and the aldosterone response to a standard hormonal stimulus, a relationship estrogen didn't show.[2] Since aldosterone is the hormone that governs how much sodium, and by extension fluid, the kidneys hold onto, that's a plausible mechanism connecting cycle phase to how the body manages fluid, separate from how much water someone happens to drink that day.

What the Research Shows
The Valtin review remains the standard reference on the eight-glasses claim specifically because it did what the original guideline never did: it went looking for the underlying studies and reported that it couldn't find them. The review does note that higher fluid intake has a real place in specific situations, like vigorous exercise or hot climates, but that's a different, narrower claim than a universal daily number for everyone.[1]
On the hormonal side, the same 2006 study that connected progesterone to aldosterone across the menstrual cycle measured the relationship directly using infused angiotensin II as a standard stimulus, and found progesterone tracked with the aldosterone response independent of the renin-angiotensin system that normally drives it.[2] Basic water-balance physiology describes thirst and vasopressin as the two levers the body actually uses to hold hydration steady day to day, which is a separate, tightly regulated system from whatever number shows up in a food log.[3]
