Definition

Cycle length is the number of days from the first day of one period through the day before the next period starts. Day 1 of a cycle is the first day of menstrual flow.[1] In a study of 612,613 real-world cycles, the mean cycle length was 29.3 days.[2]

What Cycle Length Measures

Cycle length measures one full pass through the menstrual cycle, from the start of one period to the start of the next. Under the day count sit two phases: the follicular phase, which runs from day 1 to ovulation, and the luteal phase, which runs from ovulation to the next period.[1]

How Cycle Days Are Counted

No device measures cycle length. It's counted. Day 1 is the first day of menstrual flow.[1] From there the days count up until the next period starts, and that day becomes day 1 of a new cycle. Most trackers, Go Go Gaia included, treat the first day of real flow as day 1 rather than any light spotting that shows up beforehand.

What the Research Shows

The largest real-world dataset comes from a 2019 study of 612,613 cycles logged by 124,648 app users. Mean cycle length was 29.3 days with a standard deviation of 5.2 days, and mean period length was 4.0 days.[2]

The same study found cycles shorten and settle with age. Mean cycle length dropped by 3.2 days from age 25 to 45, mostly because the follicular phase got shorter, while the luteal phase stayed fairly stable.[2]

Cycle-to-cycle variability lives mostly in the first half of the cycle. A pooled analysis of more than 3,300 cycles found the follicular phase averaged 18.5 days with a standard deviation of 6.5 days, against 11.7 days and a standard deviation of only 2.8 for the luteal phase.[3] A separate study of over 1,000 cycles from 141 healthy women reached the same conclusion: the follicular phase contributes most to overall cycle variability.[4] That's why predictions drift, and our follicular phase entry covers the mechanism.
