Definition
A triglyceride is a fat molecule built from one glycerol backbone joined to three fatty acids, and it's the body's main form of stored and transported fat.[1] A triglycerides blood test measures how much of this fat is circulating in the blood, reported as part of a standard lipid panel.

What Triglycerides Measure
Chemically, a triglyceride is an ester: a three-carbon glycerol backbone with a fatty acid attached at each position.[1] This is the form the body uses to store energy, insulate cells, and absorb fat-soluble vitamins.[1] The fat in food is mostly triglyceride, and so is the fat held in adipose tissue.
Fat doesn't dissolve in blood, so triglycerides travel packaged inside lipoprotein particles. Chylomicrons, made by the intestine, carry triglycerides from food, while VLDL particles, made by the liver, carry triglycerides the liver produces itself.[2] A blood triglycerides value is a snapshot of all the fat in transit through both routes at the moment of the draw. How It's Measured
Triglycerides come from a standard venous blood draw, reported in milligrams per deciliter as one of the four core values on a lipid panel, next to total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL. Because chylomicrons deliver fat from meals, triglycerides rise after eating, which is why labs historically asked for a fast before this test in particular. That practice has shifted: a 2016 joint consensus statement from the European Atherosclerosis Society and the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine found the average triglyceride change after a habitual meal is modest, about 26 mg/dL at most, and recommended non-fasting samples for routine lipid profiles.[3] Your lab or clinician still sets the instructions for any given draw.
The triglycerides value also does quiet math on the panel itself. When a lab reports a calculated rather than directly measured LDL, the classic Friedewald equation estimates it from total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides.[4]
Why People Track Triglycerides
Triglycerides sit at the crossing point of fat and sugar metabolism. When the liver takes in more glucose than it can use, it converts the surplus into fatty acids and exports them as triglyceride in VLDL, and research on insulin resistance describes elevated plasma triglycerides as part of that picture at the population level.[5] That connection is why triglycerides often get read alongside metabolic values like blood glucose and insulin rather than in isolation. What the Research Shows
The basic chemistry is settled textbook material: triglycerides are glycerol-plus-three-fatty-acid esters that store energy, insulate cells, and help absorb fat-soluble vitamins.[1]
The 2016 EAS/EFLM consensus statement compared fasting and non-fasting lipid results across large population studies and concluded that non-fasting samples work for routine lipid profiles, since triglycerides shift only modestly in the hours after a normal meal.[3]
Reviews of insulin resistance describe elevated triglycerides as one of its common metabolic accompaniments, to the point that the triglyceride-to-HDL ratio gets used as a rough surrogate marker in research settings.[5]
