Blood glucose is the concentration of glucose, a simple sugar, circulating in the bloodstream. It's the body's primary energy source and is regulated mainly by insulin and glucagon, hormones that push glucose into cells or release it from storage to keep the supply steady between meals.[1]

What Blood Glucose Measures
Every cell in the body runs on glucose, and the amount circulating in the blood at any moment reflects a constant balancing act. Eating carbohydrates raises it, and the pancreas releases insulin in response, which signals cells to take glucose in for fuel or storage. Between meals, the pancreas releases glucagon instead, which tells the liver to release stored glucose so levels don't fall too far.[1] That back-and-forth is why a single glucose reading is really a snapshot of digestion, hormones, and activity all acting at once, not a fixed number.
How It's Measured
Fingerstick testing draws a small blood sample with a lancet and reads it on a glucometer with a test strip, most of which use an enzyme reaction (glucose oxidase or glucose dehydrogenase) to convert the glucose in the sample into an electrical signal.[2] A continuous glucose monitor (CGM), by contrast, uses a small sensor worn on the arm or abdomen that measures glucose in the interstitial fluid just under the skin, using the same kind of enzyme reaction, and reports a new reading every one to five minutes.[2] A fingerstick reads blood directly, so it reflects the current moment. A CGM reads a different fluid that trails blood glucose by a few minutes, so it's built to show the trend over hours and days rather than an instant value.
Why People Track Blood Glucose
Blood glucose isn't static across the menstrual cycle. Research on non-diabetic women using CGMs found a small, consistent biphasic pattern: median glucose runs lowest in the late-follicular phase, climbs through ovulation, and peaks during the luteal phase, the stretch of days after ovulation and before the next period.[3] The shift is modest at the population level, but it shows up reliably enough across hundreds of tracked cycles that researchers describe it as a real pattern tied to cycle phase rather than noise.

What the Research Shows
A 2023 study fitted 49 non-diabetic women with a Dexcom G6 CGM for an average of 79 days each and compared glucose across 149 full menstrual cycles. Daily median glucose was lowest in the late-follicular phase and highest in the luteal phase, a small but consistent biphasic swing.[3]
Older lab research points to a likely explanation. The BioCycle Study followed 257 women across full cycles and measured insulin resistance directly with HOMA-IR, a standard lab estimate built from fasting glucose and insulin. HOMA-IR rose from 1.35 in the midfollicular phase to 1.59 in the early luteal phase, and the rise was positively associated with both estradiol and progesterone.[4] Together, the two studies point the same direction: insulin sensitivity eases slightly as progesterone rises after ovulation, and glucose runs a little higher as a result.
