The four cycle phases, explained

A menstrual cycle runs in four stretches, and they're not equal lengths. The first half is the part that actually varies cycle to cycle; the second half tends to stay fairly steady. Here's what's happening in each.

Menstrual phase

Day 1 is the first day of real bleeding, and the menstrual phase runs for the length of your period, typically around 5 days. Estrogen and progesterone are both at their lowest here, which is why this phase can come with lower energy for some people.

Follicular phase

This starts once bleeding ends and runs until ovulation. Estrogen climbs through this window as follicles mature in the ovary, one of which will eventually release an egg. This is the phase that stretches or shrinks a cycle overall — if your cycle runs long or short one month, it's almost always the follicular phase that moved, not the luteal phase.

Ovulatory phase

A short window around the estimated day an egg is released. Estrogen peaks right before ovulation, then luteinizing hormone surges and triggers the release. This is the part of the cycle most associated with the fertile window, though the fertile window itself (days when pregnancy is possible) is wider than the ovulation day alone, since sperm can survive for several days.

Luteal phase

From ovulation until your next period starts. The ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum and releases progesterone, which prepares the uterine lining for a possible pregnancy. If there's no pregnancy, progesterone and estrogen drop in the days before your period, which is when premenstrual symptoms tend to cluster. Unlike the follicular phase, the luteal phase is usually consistent in length for a given person, commonly 12 to 16 days.

Why this is an estimate, not a fact

Cycles vary, both between people and from month to month for the same person. Ovulation timing especially isn't something you can pin down from a calendar alone — it's an estimate built from averages, not an event you can predict with certainty in advance. The more irregular your cycles run, the weaker calendar math gets, since it leans on a single typical cycle length that may not describe any one cycle well. Using your typical cycle length and luteal phase length, the days roughly split into four stretches: menstrual (bleeding), follicular (after bleeding stops, estrogen rising), ovulatory (a short window around estimated ovulation), and luteal (after ovulation until your next period). The standard estimate is cycle length minus luteal phase length. The luteal phase, the stretch from ovulation to your next period, tends to stay fairly consistent at around 14 days, while the follicular phase before ovulation is what actually stretches or shortens a cycle. So if your typical cycle is 28 days and your luteal phase is 14, ovulation is estimated around day 14. A 32-day cycle with the same 14-day luteal phase would put estimated ovulation around day 18, not day 16, because the extra days belong to the follicular phase.

The follicular phase comes first, running from the end of your period to ovulation, and is driven by rising estrogen as follicles mature in the ovary. It's the variable half of the cycle, the one that lengthens or shortens a cycle overall. The luteal phase comes after ovulation and is driven by progesterone from the corpus luteum, which prepares the uterine lining.
