Definition
Calories, logged in the app as Dietary Energy, are the kilocalories your food logger calculates from every meal you log. A kilocalorie is the amount of energy needed to raise one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius,[1] and food-energy values are built from fixed per-gram factors for protein, carbohydrate, fat, and alcohol.[2]

What Calories Measure
A calorie is a unit of energy, not a nutrient. In biochemistry, a "small" calorie is the energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius, while the "big" calorie, the kilocalorie or Calorie that shows up on a food label, is a thousand times larger and is the energy needed to raise one kilogram of water by that same degree.[1] Every food's total energy is built from its macronutrients, not measured as one single thing.
The standard method for calculating that total uses the Atwater general factor system, which multiplies a food's grams of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and alcohol by fixed conversion factors, 4 kilocalories per gram for protein and carbohydrate, 9 for fat, and 7 for alcohol, then sums the results.[2] Developed by W.O. Atwater at the USDA in the late nineteenth century, this same-factor-for-every-food approach is still widely used today because of how simple it is to apply, even though it's a modeled estimate rather than a direct measurement of any individual food.[2]

What the Research Shows
The kilocalorie itself is a fixed physical unit: the energy needed to raise one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius, a thousand times the "small" calorie used in basic chemistry.[1]
Food energy values are modeled, not weighed directly. The Atwater general factor system applies the same conversion factor to a nutrient regardless of which food it's found in, 4 kilocalories per gram for protein and carbohydrate and 9 for fat, an approach developed over a century ago that remains the basis for most food energy values today, including the ones USDA food databases report.[2]
On the cycle-intake research, the 2024 meta-analysis found a statistically significant pooled difference between phases (standardized mean difference 0.69, P = .039), though the picture varied by study: 8 of the 15 datasets found a statistically significant luteal-phase increase, averaging about 275 kilocalories a day, the rest found no significant difference between phases, and one study actually found higher intake in the follicular phase.[3]
