Anovulatory Cycle

Definition

An anovulatory cycle is a menstrual cycle in which no egg is released.[1] Bleeding can still arrive and may look like a normal period, but without ovulation no corpus luteum forms, so progesterone never rises the way it does in the second half of an ovulatory cycle.[2]

What an Anovulatory Cycle Is

In an ovulatory cycle, a dominant follicle matures, the LH surge fires, and an egg releases. In an anovulatory cycle that sequence doesn't complete, so no egg releases and no corpus luteum forms. Since the corpus luteum is the cycle's only progesterone source, the whole progesterone half of the luteal phase never happens.[2] Bleeding can still occur, and from the outside the cycle can look ordinary. In a Norwegian population study, 1,545 women with normal-length cycles were sampled during the presumed luteal phase, and 37% had a single progesterone result consistent with no ovulation in the cycle sampled.[3] One sampled cycle isn't a diagnosis, but it shows how often a normal-looking cycle can be anovulatory.

How Common It Is Across Life Stages

Anovulation clusters at the edges of reproductive life. Endotext notes cycles are most irregular around menarche and menopause because of anovulation and incomplete follicular development.[1] A study of 622 New Zealand women tracked with urine pregnanediol found the share of ovulatory cycles rose from 48% at ages 10 to 14 to 72% at 20 to 24, plateaued at 98% at 30 to 39, then fell to 66% after age 50.[4] Postpartum shows the same pattern: in a systematic review of nonlactating women, only 20% to 71% of first postpartum bleeds were preceded by ovulation, depending on the study.[5]

How It Shows Up in Tracked Data

Mostly through what's missing. The BBT rise depends on progesterone from the corpus luteum, so an anovulatory cycle shows no sustained temperature shift.[6] The same goes for PdG, the urinary progesterone metabolite, which stays low instead of rising through the second half of the cycle.[2] An ovulation test can still turn positive, since research documents LH surges that aren't followed by egg release, including follicles that luteinize without rupturing.[2] Anovulatory cycles also appear in cycle-irregularity research and clinical workups, which is part of why researchers increasingly separate ovulatory from anovulatory cycles when studying cycle effects on other metrics.

What the Research Shows

The occasional anovulatory cycle is a population-level norm, not a rarity. The New Zealand cohort found ovulatory hormone patterns at every stage from 120 days after menarche to seven days before menopause, alongside anovulatory cycles at every age.[4]

Measurement method matters a lot. The 37% figure from the Norwegian study came from one progesterone sample per woman, timed to the presumed luteal phase, an indirect marker taken on a single day rather than day-by-day tracking, so single-cycle snapshots and multi-cycle tracking answer different questions.[3] For how the confirmation tests themselves compare, see our guide to at-home hormone tests.

Can you have a period without ovulating?
