How caffeine decay works

Caffeine leaves your system on a curve, not a cliff. This calculator uses the exponential decay formula common in pharmacokinetics: remaining amount = dose × 0.5^(hours elapsed ÷ half-life). Every time a half-life passes, whatever caffeine is left gets cut in half again, so the amount never quite hits zero, it just keeps getting smaller.

What half-life actually means here

A half-life of 5 hours means that 5 hours after your coffee, about half the caffeine is still circulating; 10 hours in, about a quarter is left; 15 hours in, about an eighth. The textbook average sits around 5 hours, but the real range runs roughly 4 to 7 hours depending on genetics, liver enzyme activity, and other factors, which is why this calculator asks for a metabolism speed instead of assuming one number for everyone.

Where the 50 mg cutoff comes from

There's no universal "safe" cutoff dose, since sensitivity to caffeine at bedtime varies by person. This calculator uses 50 mg circulating at bedtime as a reference point, roughly half a cup of coffee's worth, and solves backward from your bedtime to find the latest time you could have that specific drink and still land under it. Raise or lower your own bar by adjusting bedtime or trying a smaller serving and re-running the numbers.

Your cycle and caffeine

The birth control checkbox above only applies to combined hormonal methods, the ones that include estrogen: the combined pill, the patch, and the ring. Progestin-only methods, like the mini-pill or a hormonal IUD, don't carry the same estrogen-driven slowdown in caffeine clearance, so this calculator's 1.9x multiplier isn't meant for those. The same logic extends to a natural cycle: estrogen rises and falls across the month, so caffeine tends to clear a bit slower when estrogen is higher (roughly the luteal phase) and a bit faster when it's lower. That shift is real but smaller than the birth control effect, which is why this calculator doesn't build a separate multiplier for cycle phase the way it does for birth control, it's more of a pattern worth tracking than a number worth calculating.
