What Phosphorus Measures

Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body, after calcium. About 85% of it is stored in bone, mineralized alongside calcium as hydroxyapatite, the calcium-phosphate crystal that gives bone its rigidity.[2][4] The remaining share, a small fraction of the total, works inside cells and in blood.[2]

That intracellular share does a lot despite its size. Phosphorus is a structural part of DNA, RNA, and cell membranes, and it's essential to how cells make and use ATP, the molecule that powers most cellular energy transfer.[2] Three hormones regulate how much phosphate the body absorbs, holds onto, or excretes: vitamin D increases absorption in the gut, parathyroid hormone increases how much the kidneys excrete while also boosting gut absorption, and FGF-23 decreases both.[2]

Phosphorus is measured from a standard blood draw and reported as serum phosphate.
