What Magnesium Measures

Magnesium is the fourth most common cation in the body overall and the second most common one inside cells, after potassium.[1] It's a cofactor for more than 300 enzymatic reactions, including ones involved in ATP production, muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve signaling, and cardiac conduction.[1]

Almost all of it, though, isn't where a blood draw can see it. Roughly 99% of the body's magnesium is stored in bone and soft tissue, with only a sliver circulating in serum at any given time.[2] There's also no clinically available test for ionized, biologically active magnesium, so labs measure the total amount instead, a limitation that means a serum result can look unremarkable even when the body's broader magnesium status has shifted.[2]

Magnesium is measured from a standard blood draw and reported as serum magnesium. Why People Track Magnesium

Magnesium comes almost entirely from what you eat. Green leafy vegetables, fish, legumes, and whole grains are among the foods richest in it.[1] It's also one of the most talked-about minerals in wellness content, credited with everything from better sleep to fewer cramps. The guideline-grade research is narrower than that conversation suggests.

A 2025 systematic review of randomized controlled trials looked at nutritional interventions for the psychological symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. It found consistent, positive effects for vitamin B6, calcium, and zinc across multiple trials, but concluded there was insufficient evidence to support an effect from magnesium supplementation, drawing on three small trials with inconsistent individual results rather than a broader, consistent evidence base.[3] Individual studies on magnesium and menstrual symptoms have reported benefits, but the trials are few, small, and inconsistent in dose and design, and they haven't added up to the kind of evidence guidelines are built on.
