Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) measures the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood.[3] Urea is the waste product the liver makes when it breaks down protein, and the kidneys filter it out into urine.[1] BUN is measured with a standard blood draw and appears on routine panels like the basic metabolic panel.[5]

What BUN Measures
When the body breaks down protein, it frees ammonia, a compound cells can't safely let build up. The liver converts that ammonia into urea through a series of enzyme steps called the urea cycle.[2] More than 99% of urea synthesis happens in the liver, and dietary protein is its primary source.[1] The blood carries urea to the kidneys, which filter it out and pass it into urine.[1] A BUN result is a snapshot of that traffic. It reflects how much urea the liver is producing and how much the kidneys are clearing at the time of the draw.
How It's Measured
BUN comes from a standard venous blood draw and is reported in milligrams per deciliter in the US.[3] The test reports the nitrogen portion of the urea molecule, which is where the name comes from. Some labs outside the US report the full urea concentration instead. BUN is one of the eight values on a basic metabolic panel and also appears on the larger comprehensive metabolic panel, so most people get it as part of routine bloodwork rather than as a standalone order.[5]

What the Research Shows
The urea cycle is one of the oldest well-mapped pathways in biochemistry. The liver converts ammonia from protein breakdown into urea through five enzyme steps split between the mitochondria and the cytoplasm of liver cells.[2]
The kidneys handle the bulk of disposal. They excrete about 10 grams of urea a day in a process that starts with glomerular filtration, and roughly 85% of the body's urea leaves through the kidneys overall.[1][4]
Clinical references consistently note that BUN responds to dietary and physiologic conditions unrelated to the kidneys, including protein intake and hydration status, which is why it's read alongside other kidney markers rather than on its own.[1][4]
