Definition
RMSSD, the root mean square of successive differences, is a heart rate variability measure calculated from the differences between consecutive heartbeat intervals. It's the primary time-domain measure used to estimate vagally mediated HRV, the beat-to-beat variation driven by the parasympathetic nervous system, and it stays valid even in short readings.[1]

What RMSSD Measures
The name spells out the math. Take the time gap between each pair of consecutive heartbeats, find the differences between successive gaps, square them, average them, and take the square root. That calculation makes RMSSD sensitive to fast beat-to-beat changes, and those fast changes mostly come from the vagus nerve, the main channel of the parasympathetic "rest and digest" system. That's why RMSSD is the primary time-domain measure for estimating vagally mediated HRV.[1] It's a different calculation from SDNN, the overnight HRV number most wearables report, which is a standard deviation taken over hours and reflects broader autonomic activity. The two use different math on different time windows, and values from recordings of different lengths aren't interchangeable, so an RMSSD spot check and an overnight SDNN number should never be compared directly.[1] The HRV entry covers the SDNN side.
How It's Measured
RMSSD comes from a short recording of beat-to-beat intervals, captured by an ECG, a chest strap, or a smartphone camera pressed against a fingertip. The camera method holds up surprisingly well: a 2017 study comparing smartphone photoplethysmography against a Polar chest strap and ECG found near-perfect correlations with the ECG reference and only trivial differences.[2] Short is genuinely enough for this measure. A validation study in 3,387 adults found a single 10-second recording already produced a valid RMSSD, and RMSSD held its accuracy in ultra-short recordings better than SDNN did.[3]
Why People Track RMSSD
RMSSD gives you a parasympathetic reading in the moment, without waiting for a night of wearable data. That makes it the natural measure for on-demand spot checks between overnight numbers. A single short reading is noisier than an overnight average, so it's most useful watched as a trend across days rather than judged one reading at a time.

What the Research Shows
A 2015 study of 3,387 adults tested how short an ECG recording can get before HRV measures break down, and found RMSSD outperformed SDNN at every recording length, with even a 10-second recording agreeing substantially with the standard 5-minute reference.[3]

Is RMSSD the same as the HRV number my watch shows?
Usually not. Most wearables report overnight SDNN, the standard deviation of beat-to-beat intervals over hours of sleep. RMSSD uses different math on a much shorter window and lands on a different scale, so the two numbers describe different things and aren't meant to be compared directly.
How short can an RMSSD reading be?
Short. A validation study in 3,387 adults found that even a 10-second recording produced a valid RMSSD measurement against the standard 5-minute reference, and RMSSD held up better in short recordings than SDNN did. That's why spot checks like a camera pulse reading report RMSSD rather than SDNN.
Why is my camera RMSSD reading different from my wearable's HRV?
Because they're different measures. A camera pulse check calculates RMSSD from under a minute of data taken in the moment, while a wearable calculates SDNN from hours of overnight data. The two will not match, and that's expected rather than a sign that either reading is wrong.
