Definition
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein the liver releases into the blood in response to inflammation.[1] The high-sensitivity version of the test, hs-CRP, uses an assay precise enough to measure the low concentrations a standard CRP test can't reliably detect.[1] Both tests report the same protein at different levels of sensitivity.

What hs-CRP Measures
CRP is an acute-phase protein. The liver makes it, mainly on a signal from the inflammatory messenger interleukin-6, and blood levels can climb as much as a thousand-fold at sites of infection or inflammation.[1],[2]
The honest caveat is that CRP is non-specific. It rises with bacterial and viral infections, injuries, autoimmune conditions, and many other acute and chronic states.[1] The result tells you how much inflammation you have, not what's causing it or where it is.[3] It's a marker that inflammation exists somewhere, not a diagnosis of anything.
How It's Measured
Both CRP and hs-CRP come from a standard venous blood draw. The difference is the assay, not the protein. A standard CRP test picks up the larger elevations that come with acute inflammation, while a high-sensitivity assay precisely measures the very small amounts of CRP that circulate the rest of the time.[1],[3] The "high-sensitivity" label describes the lab technique, nothing more.[1] hs-CRP shows up on inflammation panels and in cardiovascular research, where a joint CDC and American Heart Association statement covers its use as an inflammatory marker.[4]

Inflammation isn't a fixed background level, and in people who menstruate it moves with the cycle itself. The BioCycle Study measured CRP repeatedly across the cycles of 259 women and found levels varied significantly by phase, with higher values around menstruation and lower CRP when estradiol was high.[5] A single hs-CRP number is a snapshot of that moving picture. What the Research Shows
CRP is synthesized primarily in liver hepatocytes and can increase up to 1,000-fold at sites of infection or inflammation, which is why it works as a general inflammation marker.[2]
The elevation is non-specific. Numerous conditions raise CRP, both acute and chronic, infectious and non-infectious, so the value marks the presence of inflammation rather than pointing to a cause.[1]
In the BioCycle Study of 259 healthy premenopausal women, CRP varied significantly across the menstrual cycle, and a 10-fold rise in estradiol was associated with a roughly 24% decrease in CRP.[5]

What's the difference between CRP and hs-CRP?
