Definition
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone made by the syncytiotrophoblast cells of the developing placenta.[1] It signals the corpus luteum to keep producing progesterone, which sustains the uterine lining in early pregnancy.[1] It's the hormone pregnancy tests detect, in urine as a yes-or-no result or in blood as a numeric level.[2]

What hCG Measures
hCG comes mainly from the syncytiotrophoblast, the outer cell layer of the early placenta, which starts producing it soon after a fertilized egg implants.[1] Its first job is to keep the progesterone supply running. Without a pregnancy, the corpus luteum winds down and progesterone falls, but hCG stimulates the corpus luteum to keep producing the progesterone that maintains the uterine lining through the first weeks.[1][3]
hCG is also a close structural relative of LH. The two hormones share an identical alpha subunit, their beta subunits are largely matching, and hCG acts through the same receptor LH uses.[1] That's how a placental hormone can take over a job the pituitary's LH normally does.
How It's Measured
There are two common test types, and they answer different questions. A home pregnancy test is a qualitative urine test. It uses antibodies on a strip to detect hCG and gives a yes-or-no answer based on whether the level crosses the test's built-in threshold.[2] A quantitative serum beta-hCG test is a lab blood draw that measures the actual concentration and reports it as a number, so it can be repeated and compared over time.[4] Home tests also aren't all built alike. How much hCG a test needs before it turns positive differs between brands, and research testing them side by side found some don't perform at the sensitivity their packaging claims.[2]

What the Research Shows
At the population level, hCG rises steeply through the first weeks of pregnancy and keeps climbing across the first trimester before it peaks near the end of that trimester.[3][2] How any one person's numbers move over time is a conversation for their doctor, not something a chart on its own can settle.
hCG also does more than rescue the corpus luteum. Research on its biology describes roles in the growth of placental tissue and in supporting the uterine environment as pregnancy gets established.[1]
On the testing side, a laboratory comparison of home pregnancy tests found real differences in how reliably brands detected hCG, including tests that missed the sensitivity printed on their own packaging.[2] Urine concentration at the moment you test matters too, which is part of why the same day can produce different results.[4]

What's the difference between a urine pregnancy test and a blood hCG test?
A home urine test is qualitative. It gives a yes-or-no answer based on whether the hCG in your urine crosses the test's built-in threshold. A blood beta-hCG test is quantitative. A lab measures the actual concentration in your blood and reports it as a number, which is why clinicians order it when they want a measured value rather than a line.
