Definition

Copper is an essential trace mineral required as a cofactor for enzymes involved in aerobic metabolism, connective-tissue formation, and antioxidant defense, including ceruloplasmin, the copper-carrying protein that oxidizes iron so it can bind to transferrin.[1][2] Most circulating copper travels bound to ceruloplasmin.[2] In Go Go Gaia it's tracked as a logged food nutrient.

What Copper Measures

Copper is required for enzymes involved in aerobic metabolism, including cytochrome c oxidase, which drives the mitochondrial electron transport chain, lysyl oxidase, which builds connective tissue, and dopamine monooxygenase, active in the brain.[1] It's also a cofactor for copper-zinc superoxide dismutase, an antioxidant enzyme that helps protect proteins, membrane lipids, and nucleic acids from free-radical damage.[1]

Copper's best-known job, though, is in ceruloplasmin. Ceruloplasmin is a serum ferroxidase, meaning it catalyzes the oxidation of iron from its ferrous (2+) to its ferric (3+) state, which is the form iron needs to be in to bind to transferrin and move through the body.[2] Each ceruloplasmin molecule holds six to eight copper atoms, and it's responsible for the large majority of copper transport in the blood.[2]

How It's Measured

Because most circulating copper is bound to ceruloplasmin, the two are typically evaluated together: serum copper alongside serum ceruloplasmin, rather than copper on its own.[2] A large fraction of the copper the liver processes is returned to the bloodstream in ceruloplasmin-bound form, which is part of why the two measurements move together.[2]

Why People Track Copper

Copper and iron intersect at ceruloplasmin. The enzyme needs copper to do its job, and that job is oxidizing iron so the body can transport and use it, which is why copper and iron sometimes get evaluated together rather than as two unrelated minerals.[2] It's a different mineral from serum iron and ferritin, with its own separate metabolism, but the three sit close together in how the body actually moves iron around.

Copper also has a well-documented interaction with zinc. Zinc and copper compete for absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, and high zinc intake induces a protein called metallothionein, which binds copper more tightly than zinc and can pull copper out of circulation before it's absorbed.[3] It's one of the clearer examples of two trace minerals directly affecting each other's absorption rather than acting in isolation.

What the Research Shows

Copper is obligatory for cytochrome c oxidase, lysyl oxidase, dopamine monooxygenase, and copper-zinc superoxide dismutase, spanning energy metabolism, connective tissue, brain chemistry, and antioxidant defense.[1]

Ceruloplasmin's ferroxidase activity, the oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron for transferrin binding, is copper-dependent, and impaired copper-ceruloplasmin function is linked in the literature to disrupted iron transport.[2]

Clinical reference literature also describes zinc's effect on copper absorption mechanistically: zinc-induced metallothionein binds copper with higher affinity than zinc, reducing intestinal copper absorption when zinc intake is high.[3]
