Definition
Albumin is the most abundant protein circulating in blood plasma, accounting for about half of total plasma protein.[1] Hepatocytes in the liver make it and release it directly into the bloodstream, where it helps hold fluid inside blood vessels and carries substances like bilirubin, fatty acids, and many medications through the body.[1]

Albumin is measured from a standard venous blood draw and reported in grams per deciliter (g/dL). It's a routine part of the liver panel and the comprehensive metabolic panel, alongside ALT, AST, and bilirubin, and it's often reported next to total protein so a lab can calculate the albumin-to-globulin (A/G) ratio.[2][5] Each lab prints its own reference interval with the result.

Albumin's basic physiology is well documented: hepatocytes synthesize and release it at a rate of about 10 to 15 grams per day, and it functions as the primary driver of plasma oncotic pressure while transporting a wide range of endogenous and exogenous compounds.[1]
