Walking speed and gait metrics are a family of measurements, including walking speed, step length, walking asymmetry, double support time, stair ascent and descent speed, and walking steadiness, that an iPhone or Apple Watch estimates from motion-sensor data during everyday walking, without any dedicated test.[2]

What This Gait Family Measures

These aren't one metric, they're several related ones that describe different pieces of how you walk. Walking speed is distance covered per unit of time. Step length is the average distance between one footfall and the next. Walking asymmetry compares the timing of your left and right steps against each other. Walking double support is the percentage of each stride where both feet are briefly on the ground at once, a balance-related measure. Stair ascent and descent speed apply the same idea to stairs specifically. Walking steadiness rolls several of these together into one overall classification of OK, Low, or Very Low, built to reflect fall risk over the following year.

How It's Measured

None of this comes from a lab gait test. An iPhone carried at the waist or in a pocket, or an Apple Watch worn on the wrist, uses its built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to detect the rhythm of your stride during normal walking and derives these metrics from that motion data in the background. A 2023 validation study checked the iPhone Health app's gait outputs against a dedicated motion-capture reference system across children, adults, and seniors doing a six-minute walk test. Gait speed came out with good agreement across every age group. Step length was accurate in adults and seniors but only moderately so in children. Double support time was the least reliable of the metrics tested across all ages, a reminder that this whole family of numbers varies in how precisely each one is captured.[2]

Why People Track Gait Metrics

Gait speed has a long research history as a simple, low-cost way to capture how someone moves through the world day to day, without asking them to do anything different from their normal walking. Because an iPhone or Watch already carries the sensors needed to estimate it, these numbers accumulate automatically over time as a trend rather than a one-off reading, which is closer to how the research measures gait in the first place.

What the Research Shows

Gait speed is one of the more studied measures in aging research. A 2011 pooled analysis in JAMA combined individual data from nine separate study cohorts and found that gait speed was associated with survival across the full range of speeds measured, at every age studied in both men and women, and was especially informative after age 75. The researchers reported that using gait speed alongside age and sex predicted survival about as accurately as models that also factored in use of mobility aids and self-reported physical function.[1] That's a population-level statistical association from a large pooled dataset, not a diagnostic reading of any one person's number.

Apple's own walking steadiness classification and fall-risk framing are built specifically around the combination of these gait metrics rather than gait speed alone, since it's the pattern across step length, asymmetry, and double support together, not any single number, that the underlying model uses to place someone into OK, Low, or Very Low.[3] Day-to-day factors, like a hallway carpet, a heavy bag, or a bad night's sleep, can all slow someone's stride down, which is part of why researchers look at gait speed as a trend across many walks rather than reading anything into a single one.

What's the difference between walking speed and walking steadiness?

Walking speed is one single measurement, how fast you're moving, in a distance per unit of time. Walking steadiness is a composite classification Apple calculates by combining several gait metrics together, including walking speed, step length, double support time, and walking asymmetry, into one overall rating of OK, Low, or Very Low.

Do I need to do anything special for my iPhone or Watch to record these metrics?

No. An iPhone carried in a pocket or an Apple Watch worn during regular walking records these metrics passively in the background from motion-sensor data, the same way step count is recorded, without a dedicated test or app to open.

Does a slower walking speed mean something is wrong?

Not on its own. Walking speed is a population-level research measure studied across large groups of people, and a single reading isn't a diagnosis. Day-to-day walking speed also varies with things like fatigue, footwear, terrain, and what you're carrying, all of which have nothing to do with your health.
