Definition
Selenium is an essential trace mineral built into selenoproteins, including the iodothyronine deiodinases that convert thyroid hormone from its inactive form (T4) into its active form (T3), and the glutathione peroxidases involved in antioxidant defense.[1] It comes entirely from diet. On a lab panel it can be measured as serum selenium, though in Go Go Gaia it's tracked as a logged food nutrient.

What Selenium Measures
Selenium doesn't act on its own. It works by being incorporated into a specific set of proteins called selenoproteins, and its job depends on which one it ends up in.[1] In iodothyronine deiodinase, selenium sits in the enzyme that converts inactive thyroid hormone (T4) into the active form the body actually uses, T3.[1] In the glutathione peroxidase family, selenium is part of enzymes that reduce hydrogen peroxide and other reactive compounds, one of the body's core antioxidant defenses.[1] Brazil nuts, halibut, sardines, tuna, shrimp, turkey, chicken, and beef are among the foods richest in selenium.[1]
How It's Measured
Selenium status can be assessed several ways: serum selenium, hair or nail selenium for longer-term intake, or functional markers like glutathione peroxidase activity in plasma, red blood cells, or whole blood.[1] None of these is a single agreed-on gold standard, which is part of why different studies on selenium and thyroid health don't always measure the same thing.
Why People Track Selenium
Selenium comes up constantly in wellness content about Hashimoto's thyroiditis, usually framed as a supplement that helps. The actual research is more specific than that framing suggests. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found that selenium supplementation significantly reduced thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels across both treated and untreated Hashimoto's patients, and lowered TSH in patients not on thyroid hormone replacement, though that TSH effect disappeared once patients on replacement therapy were included.[2]
Despite those antibody results, the same review states plainly that selenium supplementation isn't currently part of the guidelines for hypothyroidism or thyroid disease published by the American, European, or South American thyroid associations.[2] The trials behind the antibody finding also showed substantial heterogeneity and used different antibody assays across studies, which the review's authors point to as a likely driver of how inconsistent the individual results have been.[2]

What the Research Shows
Selenium's thyroid role runs through iodothyronine deiodinase, the selenoprotein that activates thyroid hormone by converting T4 to T3.[1]
A 2024 meta-analysis of 29 cohorts and 2,358 participants found selenium supplementation reduced TPO antibody levels in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, with the effect strongest in patients not on thyroid hormone replacement therapy.[2]
The same authors were explicit that this finding hasn't translated into a guideline recommendation: as of their 2024 review, selenium supplementation isn't included in the American, European, or South American thyroid associations' guidelines for hypothyroidism or thyroid disease.[2] They also note selenium carries its own risk in excess, and one trial in their review flagged a possible link between prolonged higher-dose supplementation and increased type 2 diabetes risk.[2]
